Hypothetically Speaking

So, I'm not actually doing this, but if I did pick an individual player for a Frankenset, it would almost certainly be Kirby Puckett. Not only because he was one of my favorite players, but also because his heyday was in the late 80s, early 90s, which is a hotbed for inserts sets and subsets and special editions, so there are a ton of cards from which to choose.

Here are the backs! Again, not going to do this frankenset, but if I were... hypothetically speaking . . . This would have been page one.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I wonder if there's a way to really do a player specific Frankenset, with the potential for a lot of missing numbers. I'm sure someone much more creative than me has a method.

    1. Well, you could probably do it by just throwing out the numbering system altogether and set a completely different system, like year released, or brand...

  2. I've attempted a McCutchen frankenset, but there are too many missing numbers. Instead I am using my double serial numbers to create a serial number prefix frankenset.

    1. first page is usually do-able for hall of famers and longtime stars, but once you get a few pages in you'll start to see gaps, even with major players.

  3. I wouldn't imagine any player would fill the bill. Heck My Braves Frankenset has a lot of holes.

    1. would take a player that gets into almost every set.

  4. Junior junkie is doing it! Crazy colors and designs on this sheet. Would be a truly Frankenstein's monster of a frankenset.

    1. Griffey is probably the best option for a frankenset - or maybe Rickey Henderson given his long career that stretched into some of the biggest card producing years.

  5. Yeah, Junior Junkie's Ken Griffey, Jr. collection is the only one I know of that could possibly do a Frankenset without a ton of holes.

    1. For sure - how many pages of Larkin could a person do?

  6. Well, with Nolan Ryan, if you kept it under 250 you could fill any holes with the Pacific set of him. Of course, at some point, if you have to use a lot of that set, is it really a Frankenset? But he was pretty big during the junk wax era, and around long before that, so there might not be that many holes to fill.

    1. yeah, most of the single player sets get cut off fairly quickly, big ones I can think would be Ruth's 1992 set, and of course the Ted Williams Fleer set, but that one is under 100 cards.

  7. Interesting idea. Never thought of doing a Gwynn frankenset... but I have considered doing a combination of my favorite players for all four major sports. But I'll probably end up doing my team frankensets first.
