Building the 1959 Topps Set

I've just added the page to my blog for my 1959 Topps Wantlist updated as of today. A few weeks ago I received a large lot of commons and minor stars from the vintage guy I buy from regularly at card shows. He moved out to the East Coast, but stayed in touch. I gave him my budget and a lengthy wantlist, and he sent me about 200 needs!

I am organizing the set in a binder, sorted by team in order of their 1958 standings (the most recent stats on the back.) When I finally start to add some of those high number All-Star cards, they will go in front.

The National League Team order, with a baseball thrill in the middle.

Just a sampling of the awesomeness.

Before I started this set, I was working on a Reds' Team set, so here's what Page 1 of each team will look like. Team Card / checklist goes first, then the most common lineup from the 1958/1959 seasons.

Page 2 will have the starting rotation, then the primary relievers, then start the bench players. Each team in the set has 3 or 4 pages of cards. I'm hoping to complete the set in a year or two, I'm starting to save up for the 3 Mantles now....

Here's a Shout Out to the vintage dealer that gave me a big boost on this set, Kurt Tourdot - You can check out his facebook page or his website to see when he'll be at a show or check out his online store.  I haven't purchased from his website before, so I can only say that he's been great in person at card shows and always deals fairly.

  1. '59s seem especially stunning when they're all clustered together like that. Looks like you got a great deal from your vintage guy!

    1. Don't know if you remember him, but I brought you over to his table when we met at the National, he had a bunch of tubs of vintage in mid to low grade, and half price boxes.

  2. Nice! Good luck with your set. If/when I decide to tackle another vintage set, 1959 would be on top of my list. (So keep me in mind for your dupes!)

    1. I have accumulated a handful of dupes, and I am guessing that I will end up with more before I'm all done! I think there are a few bloggers working on the set, but I will keep an eye out for everyone's want lists!

  3. Awesome set. And big fun to pick up such a big chunk at once. I'll see if I can trim your wants.

  4. Fantastic '59s, especially the Mays and Frank Robinson. I pick up a few '59s on COMC when I see one that strikes me but I'd never be able to finish the set. It is a beauty though.

I'm headed over to Kurt's site now, to see if he's got any '56 Topps cards I need.

    1. I actually purchased the Robinson from Kurt about 3 years ago - It was one of the first vintage cards I ever bought!

  5. I must have brain farted and not hit 'publish' when I typed this previously. LOL

I've got some of your needs pulled and ready to send, Brian. I'll send you the numbers in a bit and get them to the PO sometime this week.
