. . . and Then There Were Two!
Almost done with the 1965 O-Pee-Chee Set! I struck out completely at the National, but I was able to snag a couple the other day online. Two down, two to go!
This is only the 3rd time I've ever seen a copy of this card.
And now it's mine! The only other copy on eBay is listed for 10 times the cost and is in worse condition...
Drysdale! This is only the third time I've seen this card anywhere, too. It's a little rough, but it is good enough for my set!
The Tape is on the topholder, not the card.
Just two more to go! Dave McNally and the Tigers Rookies Oyler / Northrup. I'm already bidding on a copy of the McNally on eBay, but the last card is probably going to take a while to find.

National Convention Goals
Heading to my first National Convention this month - It's going to be by far the biggest card show I've ever attended. The best thing I think I can do is to try to make a plan for myself and make some specific goals.
1 - Finish the 1965 O-Pee-Chee Set.
Only 4 cards to go, but it's hard to know ahead of time how many vendors will have even one card from this set, let alone one of the four that I need. My goal is to find all four, but I would call this a success if I can find at least two.
2 - Make some serious progress on the 1964 Topps Venezuelan Set.
I have a long way to go with this set, and similar to goal #1, I don't know that I will have a lot of options of vendors with these cards. This one will be a success if I can add another ten percent of the set (37 cards) and/or find a good deal on some of the big names (Mantle, Aaron, Mays, Koufax, etc.) AND spend under or near $100. Looking online, it seems like the options are limited and the cost too high (for me) to add any of the Hall of Famers from the set...
3 - Find some vintage packs to bust open.
This, I think, will be the easiest goal to meet. The oldest packs I've ever opened are 1978 O-Pee-Chee, so I will look for something from 77 or 76 and call that a successful goal. This is probably the biggest "waste" of money I will make at the show, too, but it's all relative. I'll be turning a valuable sealed item into loose vintage singles, but to me it is all about the experience of doing it...
4 - Find the "Clear" White Whale - the 2015 Topps Clear Kennys Vargas.
Well, either a vendor will have it, or they won't. I plan on finding out. Hopefully I will find it!

1965 O-Pee-Chee!
This marks my 65th post on the blog, so in honor of all things '65, here's a look at one of my favorite sets.
1965 was the first year that O-Pee-Chee issued cards using the Topps baseball design. The cards are the same size and all have the same front images. The only variation comes on the back of the cards, with the noticeably darker card stock, and in the corner the card shows "Printed in Canada."

The Brooks Robinson Card from that year doesn't have the printing mark on it, so the only difference is the card stock:

You may recall the Brooks Robinson from a previous post on the blog. My copy has a little mark on the front:
It's also pretty badly off center. That is a common ailment for 1965 OPC cards, and stayed that way throughout the history of the Canadian version of the Topps design.
The set only goes part way into the 4th Series, so the last O-Pee-Chee card is #283, Fred Whitfield:
It does include the 4th Series Checklist, however, with a page and a half of cards that did not actually appear in the set!
Sorry Nick Willhite fans, you're out of luck!
That means no Mantle, no Koufax, and no Killebrew- just to name a few. There are a few cards that feature those guys in the set, however, thanks to the League Leader and World Series cards:
Some of my favorite cards from the 1960's are the ones that feature the Topps All-Star Rookie Trophy. Due to the shorter run, O-Pee-Chee doesn't feature all of the 1964 Rookie All-Stars, but here are the ones they did:
Tony Oliva, of course, would have been my favorite. Have to settle for a cameo on Card #1:
The 1965 MVPs:
Tony O was the 2nd place finisher in the AL, by the way...
Sandy Koufax was the unanimous choice for Cy Young Winner in the Major Leagues, he just missed the cutoff as Card # 300 in the Topps set.
AL Rookie of the year, Curt Blefary:
The NL Rookie of the year was Jim Lefebvre, but his Topps card is too high to make it to OPC. You might recognize the second place finisher, however:
One card that did make the cut is one of my favorites:
Card #282 features Masanori Murakami, the first Japanese-born player to appear in a Major League game. You can read a little more about him here.
This is one of my favorite sets and building it got me back into the hobby full-time.
Now... I am just 5 cards away from completing this set - I'm hoping to do it sometime this year (it is, after all, the 50th Anniversary of the set).
Here are the FIVE cards I have left to go:

Want Lists Completed (For Now); let's make a deal!
It's Thursday February 12th!
That means (of course) Happy Birthday, Chet Lemon!
I've been working completing various want lists so that I can start making some trades with bloggers and blog readers - I read all these trade posts and it just looks like so much fun!
I've got a few player collections starting up:

The main team I collect is the Twins - I have very little of any team from 1995-2005 or so.
I've added page links to the top of my blog with more details. I'll try to add some posts during the week of trade bait.

Gotta start somewhere
Over the weekend I started sorting my collection by teams, to try to make sense of it all. I want to be able to find items for trade faster, and to make some room for new things.
I managed to find one box full of the very first cards I collected, and they were in pretty terrible shape:
The scan doesn't really do justice to the number of creases and dings. But I think I'm going to hang on to these, as they mean more to me than I'm sure they would to the landfill.
When I started collecting 1965 O-Pee-Chee, the first thing I bought was an eBay lot of about 50 cards, half of them from '65. Some were in great condition, others not so much, I've replaced several of them with sharper versions, but there's one I think I'm going to keep:

I don't know why anyone would want to part with this 1/1 Brooks Robinson "Spaceman" Parallel.
Every collection has to start somewhere - do you still have any of the first cards you collected?

Card show WIN
Oh boy - this show was a very good one for me.
I found some packs of junk wax that I missed the first time around as a kid - 1995 Stadium Club. Better 20 years late than never, right?
I doubled the size of my 1954 Topps collection (from 2 to a whopping 4!)
I got a great deal on these '48 Bowmans from the vintage dealer that gets all my money (He also sold me a lot of vintage at .50 per card, I picked up a bunch of nice cards from him today.)
Best of all, a different vendor brought his binder of 1965 O-Pee-Chee!

I only was missing one card that he had, Dan Osinski, but the bigger/better news was that he had the two unmarked checklists I needed (my copies were marked up like whoa)
There were several other small successes (finished the 2015 series one All-star Rookie Cup, for instance) but this was a really great show for me. I feel like I won the lottery! Even though I'm coming home with a lighter wallet.
