It was a big day at the card show!
How big? Well, take a gander at how freaking thick this card is...
Compare it to a single 1967 Topps Zoilo Versalles!
Speaking of Zoilo Versalles, I picked up a couple Twins from Kurt's .50 boxes
Some "at the bat rack" mini collection guys....
a 1980 Junior Ortiz card?!?! Don't mind if I do. Nice shades, Junior.
an Odd Great One
"Frequent" . . . Ya think? |
I rarely collect any football, but the fact that he's the holder for a kick is pretty cool. Impressive mustache, too. Those three also came in a big bargain box. I also found a dime box down the aisle:
I somehow missed Jose Canseco's Expos days. He's secretly a Blue Jay in that Leaf card.
Between the dime box and the bargain vintage, I picked up some serious trade bait, too.
A big lot from this set
And lots more fun vintage here.
Speaking of vintage, I decided to start more seriously collecting the 1969 Deckle Edge set -I'll be adding a line to my vintage want list soon.
ALOUS!
Set building continues on the 1956 Topps set . . . Slow and steady!
Now things are getting interesting!
Dave's Rookie Card was at a price I couldn't pass up. Dave was born on the same day as Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard Round The World" - fun fact!
I told about some set needs that Kurt helped me with... Blackwell is an upgrade, but this next guy...
IS THE MAN!!!
This card is trimmed and guess who has two thumbs and doesn't care? THIS GUY. I am very nearly done with the 1948 Bowman set, and I couldn't have done it without Kurt's help. He was able to work with my limited budget to find cards that made both vendor and buyer happy.
Thanks again Kurt!
Man what a day, those deckle edge are awesome. Love the frequent all star
ReplyDeleteSorry that your vintage guy is moving. Hopefully he can become my vintage guy since it sounds like he'll be a frequent vendor at the Raleigh show. How picky about condition are you going to be on those Deckles? I'm also putting that one together since I'm so close on the Game set and I've already got a few dupes from some starter lots. Nothing mint, but if you don't care, I could send them your way.
ReplyDeleteI'm not too condition sensitive, I care more about centering than borders, surface, fading... etc. I have to take a look at a checklist and figure out which ones I need.
DeleteI'm pretty sure I have Red Sox deckle doubles of you need them.
DeleteI could have sworn I had the Yaz, but now I can't find it. I may have moved it to a trade pile because I wasn't building the set... I have Ken Harrelson, who has a badly painted "B" on his KC Athletics cap. I think those are the two Red Sox from the set.
DeleteI think I have an extra Yaz. Email me your address so I can pwe you.
DeleteIt's not every day that a Dave Winfield rookie is overshadowed...but indeed he was, by Stan the Man, of course. Looks like a legendary day at the card show.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid Al Ortiz Jr. overshadowed them all. What a magnificent card.
ReplyDeleteAlso, another person moving to North Carolina? This has been going on for 30 years. Isn't the state at full capacity yet?
The best part for me was that I got because of the amazing photo, but didn't realize until I got home that Al Ortiz, Junior was that same Junior Ortiz that played for my hometown Twins in the early 1990s. He's the only Twin to wear number "0" and had a great Yogi-esque quote.
DeleteWhen asked if an injury would keep him out of the lineup for six weeks he replied "No, longer than that - maybe a month and a half."
He also missed a game once after stepping on a papaya.
Those are some great pick-ups! I'm envious of that Perez and Ewell Blackwell. Wait, Conseco as an Expo? Had no clue that even happened.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he was ever on the Expos 25 man Roster. His last Major league game was the year before with the Chicago White Sox...
DeleteI was sorry to miss his last show. He's contributed quite a few cards to my collection.
ReplyDeleteTechnically there's one more chance to catch him in MN - he's doing the tiny Mounds View show this weekend.
DeleteYeah, I don't know what my vintage collection would look like if not for Kurt. Smaller, for sure.
