Trade Bait: New(er) stuff!

Hello cats and kittens, let's talk trades.

I have sent out a few packages to the good folks that have contacted me so far. I'm adding this post to show a few items that might fit someone's specialty needs from the new 2015 Topps and some other recent issues.

Here are some scans of 2015 Topps that are available to a good home in trade:

Here are some parallels from the recent past:

Minis!

Some random relics/autos:

I foolishly sold off a box filled with 2014 Topps Heritage / Topps Archives / Donruss singles to a vendor at a card show in December because I thought I would be stuck with the cards forever! Now I wish I still had that box because I just know there would so things I could trade in there. Ah well, Live and learn!

I realized that scanning everything was going to take forever, so there's just a small taste and a random sampling.

Interested in anything scanned above? Interested in trading in General? Send me a message using the handy contact form on the right of my blog, or a comment with a way to contact you below. I'll update this post as things are claimed. I'll make new posts for new trade bait items.

Favorite Card Backs

(I'm using a bunch of COMC images because my scanner and I are having a little disagreement... should have it all worked out tomorrow)

I'm not sure if it is a coincidence or if it is fate (maybe it's just.... arbitrary), but many of my favorite card backs have come from years ending in 4.

Take this Angel Scull card:

Not only is the name Angel Scull amazing by itself, but the first line "Angel, a Cuban speed merchant," is a fantastic opener. The whole 1954 set is well-known for great comics on the back and colorful and appealing design.

Then in 1964, we have Mr. Bennett, who just might be the Phillies' first (and only) time-trave
ling pitcher:

I've mentioned my love for 1984 Topps backs before - They share a lot of the same qualities of other 80s backs, but this is only one from Topps to include the full color team logo. Nice!

Similar to the 18 year old 19 year old, 1987 Topps features a right-handed throwing left-handed Quarterback, Tom Foley:

That is an impressive feat, though I can see why he chose baseball instead of football since they let him use his dominant hand to throw the ball...

Score has some of the best copy - you learn a lot about the player from the backs of these cards - here's the first one I grabbed from a pile of 1988 Score cards:

Such flowery prose!

And of course, my favorites are the 1948 Bowman set - lots of nicknames, lots of great stories:

Do you have a favorite card back? Maybe an example or two of some really hilarious errors, or unintentionally funny biographical details about the player?

1978 OPC Wax Pack

Last week I had a big success opening a pack of 1979 O-Pee-Chee. This time it was a little less lucky, but no less fun.  I actually opened these quite a while ago, but I didn't have a blog then... so...

The two pocket page, by the way, is great for displaying vintage wax wrappers.

Just like the 1979 edition, 1978 O-pee-chee has 10 cards. And it also had a stick of gum.
The gum was stuck to the back of the Roy Hartsfield card, I lost a little bit of paper at the bottom of the card, but the gum came off pretty easily otherwise. Pedro Borbon was the card with wax from the wrapper, the stain was not too bad, and most of the residue came off.
Jim Spencer has an updated front - listing him as a Yankee but using the same photo as the Topps issue. I flipped the Ellis Valentine card to show the OPC back - the color was not consistent on all the backs, but generally the cards from 1978 have a lighter tint compared to Topps.

All the cards shown are available for trade - I didn't get any Twins, and I didn't get the Eddie Murray I was hoping to pull. I think the cards are all pretty cool. O-pee-chee had serious centering and cutting issues, you can see how a lot of these are off-center and/or have jagged edges.

I opened the second pack of 1978 OPC and did a little better on that pack-  the Mike Schmidt I pulled is already on its way out to a Phillies fan in one of my first trades, so I can't show that scan.

Have you opened any vintage wax? Does it seem like a waste, or is it worth it to you to have the thrill?

Saturday's card show "Winfall"

A "Winfall" - as in Winfield:

A vendor was selling tons of junk wax era singles and had an album of stars and HOFers at 1 dollar per page. I bought all 6 pages of Dave Winfield - this was just a small sample. I ended up with a few cards I already owned, but at 9 for a dollar I wasn't being picky.

It was a big big day for vintage as well, as I found an off-condition Minnie Minoso rookie card along with some other very fun gems:

Just a dollar fifty for the Oliva rookie, I will upgrade it eventually, but at that price it was an easy choice. Aparicio has a patch on his sleeve commemorating the Star Spangled Banner.

Quick Trivia question - What is Vic Janowicz's claim to fame?

The vendor that gets all my money saved some 1948 Bowmans for me, and these really took the cake.

"Pistol Pete" Reiser, Johnny Mize, Rex Barney, and Ray Poat. A little chippy and dirty, but that never bothered me. Oh... And "The Heater from Van Meter" I almost forgot. I broke my previous record for spending today on a single card, but adding a Bob Feller card to my collection was an opportunity I could not pass up. He gave me a really good deal on it, like he does with everything else.

As usual, there were dimebox deals as well, and I found some fun things:
The Canseco is a box bottom card.

As usual for a show in Minnesota, there were lots of Twins to choose from, so I didn't pass up the chance to add some Mauer Power and a Kirby card from the dark ages of my collecting days:

Ok, so maybe I buried the lede a bit on that Bob Feller find, but overall I really cleaned up at the show today. I got some fantastic deals on vintage and junk wax.

I found some 2-pocket pages in the shop as well, so I'll be able to display some of my vintage wax wrappers in style (Thanks to Mark Hoyle for the tip!)
