2016 Goals

Nothing new under the sun here at the old Arbitrary. Except, well, it's a New Year!

That means Arbitrary Declarations of Collecting Goals!!!!

1. Finish the 1948 Bowman set.

I've already picked up most of the heavy hitters - Spahn, Musial, Berra, Feller - just one big name remains, Phil Rizzuto. Less than ten cards to go and a year to find them? I think I can do this.

2. Finish the 1965 O-Pee-Chee set.

Just one card remains - the dual Tigers Rookie of Ray Oyler and Jim Northrup, card #259. If I can find one in good shape (better than the one on eBay), I will be a happy camper.

3. Start a new Vintage Set

Yes, I know I have my hands full with 1956 Topps and with 1964 Topps Venezuelan, but those cards are going to stay just as far out of reach tomorrow as they are today. I haven't decided what to chase next, but you all will be the first to know.

4. Spend smarter!
My first full year back in collecting saw several missteps in spending - I bought too many blasters and jumbo packs of cards I wasn't really interested in - boxes of A&G and Topps Finest than I didn't enjoy - all of which left me with less funds for cards I was trying to acquire. I will take things a bit slower and be patient for the right deal.

what are some of your collecting goals for 2016?

  1. I was proud of myself not buying many blasters this year. Our box breaks are much more enjoyable and serve a better purpose. If it makes you feel any better I bought way too many my first year of blogging as well.

  2. While I'm not a vintage collector (yet), those are great and attainable goals.

I can relate most with #4. I found myself impulsively buying packs that I really didn't need for my collection but went for the thrill of pulling a bit that 99% of the time never came.

  3. I think the best thing anyone can do is budget their purchases. Personally, I won't be buying as many packs as I did last year, just the products I'm interested in (Topps flagship, Heritage, maybe some Donruss, and definitely Diamond Kings if there is a 2016 issue of that) and get the most out of my money at card shows, flea markets, and yard sales.

I suppose now I'll have to get a post up about my collecting goals now.

  4. I bought a lot less retail in 2015 and I can say it's a goal that will pay off in the end. Better to sample a few packs here and there and just buy the singles you want off other websites. Best of luck in hitting those goals in 2016, Brian!

  5. Good luck with the 48's. Should be attainable. Completely agree with number 4. I spend zero dollars on retail. Only buy the cards I want. Although most are of the vintage variety

  6. Excellent goals Brian. I spent too much on cards this past year as well. Def working on a budget this year!
