I could not find any of the four OPC cards I needed to complete my set, but I did get closer to getting a complete Alou Brothers run from their playing days. This 1965 Jesus Alou was a high number, I had to go to about three different vendors that had '65 albums before finding this copy.
Four more 1948 Bowmans! Enos Slaughter (top right) was the big ticket card of the day. These four, plus one from Wednesday night brings me to a total of 38 of 48 cards from the set. I might finish it before the next National!
Ah, Kennys. I asked every vendor in the room if they had a copy of the Vargas Topps Acetate card, and this was the closest I could get.
This one was also numbered to just 10 copies.
Three more for the 1956 set- I saw several tables with commons for $2-3 each. I decided to hold off on those to save up for meeting some other goals.
Always room for dime box finds.... some highlights
From this big stack.
This was one big goal for the National - find an unopened pack of something older than I've ever opened before. The 1975 Mini pack was cheaper than the 1976 and 1977 packs, so I decided to pull the trigger on this one. I'll open it up some time later on...
I still can believe you haven't found that Vargas. Have you seen some on eBay?
ReplyDeleteOnce I decided to build the rainbow, I did a search that included Sold listings - 3 of them have sold already, so really I'm looking for one of the 7 remaining copies (unless someone decides to re-sell one of the first three)... I'm hoping some more people open up cases of series one.
DeleteAh, you couldn't have picked better than a '75 mini pack (cheaper than '76 or '77 packs, whaaaaa?). I opened one up on my blog once. http://nightowlcards.blogspot.com/2011/09/greatest-75-mini-post-of-all-time-m-m-m.html
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I'm trying to decide how much ceremony should be involved... Should I do it on video? Do I light a candle? Set off Fireworks?
DeleteVideo would be cool. I would've loved to do video when I opened mine.
DeleteWow, I didn't know you bought a '75 Mini pack! Very cool. One of the dealers near the end of the show had a stack of '56 Topps for a dollar each, but almost all of them were in pretty rough shape.
ReplyDeleteDid you ever get a chance to look through the quarter vintage box at that table I showed you?
DeleteOn top of that box there was a box of cards at very low prices - '56 Topps were going for $2 each, that's where I found the three above. Most of the stack was in rough shape. I usually don't get too picky, but I knew I could find better ones for not much more $$, so I passed on most of them.
That Slaughter and those Bowmans are awesome. Definitely light a candle
ReplyDeleteI recognize a Hostess Griffey card up there. I ate a TON of cupcakes back in the day trying to find a Sandberg, which I eventually did. But now you can find those in dime boxes? No matter. It's not like anyone forced me to eat all of those cupcakes. :)
ReplyDeleteIf it makes you feel any better, I didn't see any Sandberg Hostess cards... probably worth it to eat the cupcakes at the time!
DeleteNice pickup on that Vargas. Love the dime box cards too.
ReplyDeleteI was a bit surprised (but probably shouldn't have been) at the number of vendors that were from MN or tied to MN in some way. Lots of Vargas stuff available, even though I couldn't find the exact one I was trying to find.
