OK, so maybe we're being unfair to Donruss?
I bought two packs at the last card show I went to.
They sure are trying to keep people interested! In the two packs there were three different Hall of Famers, a total of five insert cards, one serial numbered, and one autographed.
Here are the base cards from Pack 1:
Nice little synergy with the Big Hurt and Abreu - same dugout in the background, two great Chicago Sluggers.
Base cards from Pack 2:
Again, no shortage of star power, and Rickey will find a place in my collection... but the design is just... oh well. Not interested in beating a dead horse.
Now, for the Inserts/Hits:
Very nice, but once again I feel just a bit underwhelmed by the design. Pretty much everything here is up for trade - I will be keeping the Rickey Henderson Card... the rest I am not all that enthusiastic about.
I don't mind the use of various elements from old sets, but that huge "D" logo on the card looks ridiculous. Call me picky, but that's one of my biggest complaints about the card design.
ReplyDeleteYeah- the big D reminds me yet again that they don't have the team logos.
DeleteI wonder if they could make their own logos for each team, like some kind of icon that represents the team's city without referencing the team name? I suppose that would create it's own new set of problems.
Or maybe just more of an effort in the photography to get images that feature the player without the logo being blatantly missing...
Like all Panini products Donruss is going to have some flaws. If they can just improve the base set some this would be a really nice set. The inserts are usually pretty nice and the throwbacks are pretty cool too. It makes for a fun box to open because you get bunch of stuff to trade. Lot's of inserts, relics, autos and legend players.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point - I did enjoy opening the packs, even though I think I will only want to keep one card out of the whole stack.
DeleteI think the Gwynn looks nice. Despite the glaring lack of the logo, I'm interested in the Baez auto. Perhaps I can throw in some extra stuff into the package I'm sending for the group trade payment?
ReplyDeleteSure - that sounds fine to me - Baez, Gwynn, and how about Jacoby Ellsbury from the old New York Baseball Club?
DeleteThat sounds great, thanks!
DeleteLooking at the base cards from a distance it looks like there are 2 teams in major league baseball and the guys there play for one or the other. Panini Donruss is just dreadful. They have a couple decent inserts but, ugh.
ReplyDeleteI might like it more if they took a page out of the early 60s Topps playbook and had the players remove their caps - the players themselves look fairly anonymous in most of the shots, presumably Panini picks poses that will make the photoshopping easier?
DeleteI'm over the lack of logos (temporarily, of course - I'd love to see Panini get a license). I think this set looks strong, especially given last year's so-so offering. If Panini can keep making improvements and putting out fairly nice releases, I think they'll show why they should get a license.
ReplyDeleteSo... do you want the Chris Carter? We haven't traded before, but I bet I could find some other HOUSTON BASEBALL CLUB cards in my collection that could be a fit for you. If you're interested, I can be reached at brian dot d dot oneal at gmail dot com
DeleteI'd be more than happy to give Chris or any other members of the HBC a happy home. Let me see what I can dig up for you.
DeleteOh, and if no one's laying claim, I'll take that Trout as well.
DeleteNot yet - The Trout is all yours as I run a first come, first served blog.
DeleteGoodness, this set is awful. I'd even have to think twice about buying any singles from the dime boxes, which is saying something.
ReplyDeleteAs ugly as it is, could you put that Ichiro insert (of the Miami Baseball Club) aside for me?
Ha! Yes, I'll save the Miami Baseball Club's new outfielder Ichiro for you.
DeleteMight try and grab a team set at the show this weekend. Won't look real hard though. Dam ugly
ReplyDeleteYep, they're ugly, but the checklist is pretty nice and the inserts are as well.
